As the scarves & shawls come in direct contact with your neck and skin, we have chosen rayon as the material, which is extra kind to sensitive skin. We recommend washing your scarves & shawls by hand or if you need to wash them in the machine, it’s best to put them in a mesh washing bag, using cold water and the delicate cycle to preserve the material in the best possible way.

Like all of our textiles, the scarves & shawls have been handwoven by indigenous mayan women in the Western Highlands of Guatemala; artisans who receive a fair salary for their work, hence the reason these products have been marked as Fair Trade. The artisans use the traditional back-strap loom, a mayan weaving technique that has been passed on from mother to daughter for more than 5000 years.
Yabal Guatemala is a Fair Trade organization, focused on sustainable fashion, that supports indigenous women’s weaving cooperatives in Guatemala, providing them with the opportunity to sell their hand-woven products through local and international markets. These scarves & shawls are such a product.
When you buy a Yabal hand-woven product such as our scarves & shawls you not only contribute directly to the economic self-sufficiency of the women we work with, but your purchase also supports the fair trade workshops and social programs implemented in their communities.
Regardless of if you are going to a wedding or for a walk in the park, our scarves & shawls have a timeless design that can be used for any occasion, but here are a few things to think about when choosing the right scarves & shawls for you:
You will want to choose a color that does not go with the rest of your clothing; the scarf should be a contrast between your top and your face, so pick a color that matches your skin tone, but that doesn’t correspond directly to the colors of the rest of your outfit.
Many times scarves & shawls are used to make a statement, either a fashion statement or to accentuate your style or to make your outfit pop. If you are wearing a top with patterns, choose a single colored shawl. If you are wearing a plain top, it’s better to choose a scarf with distinguished patterns to express your personality.
Depending on the season and the climate in your area; you will want to opt for a shawl that comes in a bigger size to wrap yourself warm on a chilly winter evening and a lighter shawl for breezy summer months.
The scarves & shawls should feel soft to the touch and be of a material that does not irritate your skin, avoid polyester! It should be easy to drape and have an ample flow to the fabric.
Not sure how to use your scarves & shawls? Depending on the size of the scarf and the style you are going for or the occasion, you might want to opt for a classic loop or a turtleneck style or go French. Here’s an excellent guide for you with lots of different examples and instructions on how to tie your scarves & shawls. You just can’t go wrong.
From sweat cloth to military ranking and fashion statement, the history and development of the scarf is long and very interesting. Read all about it here.
