The Women Behind Yabal

OUR HISTORY

Each Y’abal product celebrates the ancestral art of Mayan backstrap loom weaving. All Yabal fabrics are meticulously handwoven by cooperatives of indigenous women weavers in the highlands of Guatemala. We work hand in hand with over 50 artisans to create an accessories collection that blends traditional and contemporary design. Yabal is more than an accessories brand; we are a company with a mission: to empower women artisan cooperatives in rural communities of Guatemala.

OUR WORK

Our fabrics are handcrafted using the Mayan backstrap loom by cooperatives of Guatemalan Mayan artisans. Featuring ecological plant dyes, natural cotton, recycled denim threads, recycled plastic bags, and natural sheeps wool. Yabal is a Fair Trade organization dedicated to the empowerment of rural women artisans and all profits fund social programs for our weavers. Learn more below about the artisans and production process behind our collection.

SOCIAL PROGRAMS

All profits and donations are used to fund social programs with a focus on women’s empowerment for our artisan communities in Guatemala!

There are many obstacles that exist for women and rural communities in Guatemala; illiteracy, lack of education, limited business skills, and a lack of job opportunities. Many families survive on less than $100 a month, especially in the region of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan. And women have even less opportunities for work and education than men.

Through our non-profit partner, Yabal Guatemala, we support women and community partners through social and economic projects. 80% of the Board of Directors is made up of women leaders from our partner communities. All profits from sales from the Yabal weaving social enterprise are re-invested into Yabal Guatemala’s social programs for the artisan communities with whom we collaborate.
