What is the traditional Mayan design of the cotton pillowcase?

The hand-brocaded Bird pillow features a variety of stylized birds. Traditionally these bird motifs represent the Mayan Nahual (day sign) of Tzikin, which is considered a messenger between people and the heavens, connecting the wearer of the huipil to the divine. When making pillow cases, each pillowcase will feature slight variations in the design as each brocade weaving is an art piece inspired by the weaver.

Diamond Pillowcase:

Featuring traditional Mayan geometric brocade work, woven into the fabric by hand, using the backstrap loom. Each pillow will feature slight variations in the design details as each one is an artistic work of inspiration by our artisans.

Ranta Pillowcase:

The embroidery rantas design in the center is hand-embroidered with thread and needle and joins the two textile panels together. It is a traditional technique used in cortes (traditional Mayan skirts) and huipiles (Mayan blouses) to join two panels of fabric together.

Revive Pillowcase:

This hand-crafted pillow cushion is handwoven with ecological threads. Featuring intricate traditional Mayan geometric brocade work, woven into each fabric by hand, using the backstrap loom. This zig zag brocade motif is common in the weaving style from the region and has a direct relation with Mayan cosmovision- the zig zag pattern represents the Mayan Nahual (day sign) of Kan, the serpent energy that provides protection.

What material is the cotton pillowcase made from?

Yabal Home is an artisanal line of handwoven textile accessories. Our fabrics are handcrafted using the Mayan backstrap loom by cooperatives of Guatemalan indigenous artisans. The material used for our cotton pillowcases is natural cotton and naturally dyed threads. The gray color is artisanally dyed using ash, the blue threads are from recycled denim jeans factory scraps, and the white is natural raw cotton. The lilac color comes from elderberry, rose/red is from cochineal insects, green is from leaves, yellow from tree bark. Enjoy your ethically made cotton pillowcase!
