The Ranta bedspread is handwoven with ecological threads on the Mayan backstrap loom. The gray color is artisanally dyed using ash and the white thread is natural raw cotton. The rose color is from cochineal insects and the lilac color is made from a local tree bark. The embroidery rantas design in the center is hand-embroidered with thread and needle and joins the two textile panels together. It is a traditional technique used in cortes (traditional Mayan skirts) and huipiles (Mayan blouses) to join two panels of fabric together. Handwoven by cooperatives of Mayan women weavers in rural communities from Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.
